The winter is taking a toll on your skin and hair. You tried conditioners, hair masks, moisturizers and even high-end Sephora products, but nothing seems to work. Your lips are chapped, you have alligator skin and your locks look frail. While any honest hair stylist will tell you that nothing fixes split, dry ends other than a haircut, they all agree that some products are more effective in providing the moisture that your hair needs than others.
Our top hair stylists and fashion makeup artists suggest an alternative product for your hair and skin needs.
Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil
HAIR: Coconut oil is a natural superstar pre-wash conditioner for dry and damaged hair. It is an outstanding moisturizer and promotes healthy, shiny hair.
Coconut oil has been used as a hair treatment in the tropical regions since ancient times. Extensive use of coconut oil reduces protein loss and prevents damage to the hair cuticle. The moisturizing effect of the oil reduces damage caused by mechanical and chemical factors such as combing, styling, hot tools or coloring, as well as the damage produced by natural elements such as wind, rain and cold temperatures.
SKIN: Coconut oil is also a wonderful skin moisturizer. It has anti-aging properties and helps in treating various skin problems such as psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema, to name a few.
IMMUNE SYSTEM: Coconut oil improves your immune system as it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties.
How To Use:
Hair extensions specialist Nicole Parkinson recommends to put 1-2 tablespoons in a small dish and place it in warm water, until the coconut oil liquefies. Apply liberally onto hair from roots to ends, 1-2 hours prior to shampooing. Make sure you wash and rinse your hair well with your usual shampoo.
Apply it from head to toe after shower, massaging small amounts into the skin. Wait 20 minutes, then wipe off any leftover oil, that has not been absorbed by the skin, with a clean towel.
Fashion makeup artist JV Galindo’s HOT TIP: Mix coconut oil with bio oil and apply everywhere on face and body. The mixture will reduce scars, stretch marks, balance skin tone and prevent skin from aging. Bio oil and coconut oil are two of the most underrated skin care products, not to mention cost effective. You can buy both products on Amazon.
Colorist and balayage expert Sandra Vasilescu’s superfood beauty snack:
Mix one teaspoon green tea powder with 2 tablespoons coconut oil and 1 tablespoon bee pollen together. Whip it until everything is incorporated into a creamy consistency. Eat, be strong and beautiful!
P.S. Feel free to use this recipe as a facial mask as well. 🙂
