Lance Lappin-TriBeCa hair stylist-NYC salon owner
Lance has a magical way with scissors. I don’t think he even has to look, he just feels what he needs to do–and the results are always flattering, absolutely perfect for me and my hair. If you think of those hair salons where you pick a photo of the haircut you want and the stylist just cuts it like the picture without thinking about your face shape or hair type, well, this would be the opposite! My three teens have all gone to the salon too, all to different stylists, with great results. Do you know how important hair is to a teenager? And they’ve all been positively glowing when they came out. ~Guest
I have always felt the need to create but it wasn’t until I discovered how my hands work with hair that I found my true calling. Some of the best hair stylists in the industry taught me my craft, and in 1985 I moved to TriBeCa and opened my own salon.
The foundation of my work is precision hair cutting. I always start with the basics whether I create a cute short haircut, a bob hairstyle or a hairstyle for long hair. From here I explore the edges of contrast. The outcome is a perfect balance and shape that is distinct to the individual.
Walking the streets of New York is energizing. The variety of styles in fashion, hair, and even window displays inspire me. Hair color in its natural state intrigues me.
It never feels like work. It’s the one thing I do without thinking of anything else. I love listening to my clients, it helps me to understand who they are and what makes each one so unique.
I would be working with autistic children, helping them to navigate the world on their own terms.
I love the rush of riding my bicycle around the streets of the city. The sights, smells and sounds of New York are intoxicating.
Friendly, quiet, perceptive, meticulous.
It is all about the cut. Hair should look great with little effort. A good haircut can adjust from edgy to conservative and evolves gracefully as it grows out. Hair is such an important part of our identity and its cut and color help to convey who we are. Adapting each haircut with respect to hair texture, shape, color as well as facial structure is an important aspect of my technique. I like to use disconnection and layering techniques to give each haircut a modern look.
Hard to decide. A cool edgy shoulder-length hairstyle is bold and feminine, a bob is always sleek and sexy, and curly hair is irresistible to me. Designing a short hairstyle to a particular face is so much fun too! I just love cutting hair!
